Power project
Here we have only two choices, either wind or the sun. We have no power. Cables have perished n the sun since 1987, when power was cut, and sooner or later we’ll have to remove and dispose of them.
We’d like to install a mini- solar generator (even a bicycle wheel with dynamo) with a globe per each house. We have seen some kits, though they cost (retail) 148 Euro each.
There is a constant and reasonably strong wind here. The Government latest research have measured winds throughout Haiti, but not in La Gonave, therefore we’d necessarily have to proceed with trial and error.
A wind and solar plant and small solar powered devices is the best choice, given the island is in an extremely favourable position, even when compared to the Caribbean area itself. Obviously costs are higher than wind-power, and solar cannot be home-built as much as wind devices, to an extent.
project data
Mini-solar system: one light per family: Euro 50
1 wind generator - 1Kw, modular complete - delivery in Port au Prince Euro 850.00 + VAT
2nd generator- Euro 650.00+VAT. These two generators would save US$ 2,500/year of diesel.
